Alben was born in Plovdiv and grew up attending the local school for Deaf children. He has a Deaf wife and three hearing children. Professionally, he works as a service technician and installer. In his free time, he enjoys riding his motorbike and playing football.
Alben shares: “I dream of a future where we Deaf people are strong and motivated, because together we can achieve so much more.”
Alexander, or Sashko as he is often called, is an adventurous spirit for whom freedom is essential. It’s no surprise that he loves to travel, and cycling has become a way of life for him. Sashko works at a printing house and serves on the board of directors for the “Listen Up” Foundation.
He shares: “I believe it’s essential for Deaf and hearing people to be equal in society. I am committed to promoting this ideal and will work toward fostering understanding between different communities, so we can all live in harmony and mutual support."
Alexander (Sasho) stands as one of the most dynamic and recognized figures within the deaf community in Bulgaria. His creativity, determination, and unwavering commitment to truth and justice define his persona. He brings a wealth of professional and personal experience, strong connections with international experts, and an impressive skillset in teamwork. Outside of his professional pursuits, Sasho is a passionate cyclist, celebrated for numerous sports achievements.
Dedicated to the betterment of the deaf community in Bulgaria, Sasho founded the Active Deaf Youth Organisation (ADYO), the country's first registered entity focusing on uniting and uplifting young deaf individuals, aiding in their development, skill-building, adaptation, and navigation through various challenges.
Sasho is an alumnus of New Bulgarian University in Sofia, holding degrees in 'Animation in Cinema' and 'Graphics and Illustration'. He is among the few who have undergone training programs at Gallaudet University in the USA, the world's only university where instruction is primarily in sign language.
Fluent in Bulgarian, American and International Sign Languages, as well as spoken Bulgarian and English, Sasho has an extensive professional background. He has been involved with various organizations and associations, such as the Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria and 'Opportunities with no limits'. He has played significant roles in numerous campaigns, including the inaugural International Week of the Deaf in Bulgaria 2017.
Sasho is a member of the European Union of Deaf Youth and a prominent tutor in international training courses addressing issues within the deaf community. His work has been recognized with several accolades, including being named in Forbes' '30 under 30' list in the Social Entrepreneur category. Additionally, he serves on the official Council for the Bulgarian Sign Language at the Ministry of Education and Science, holding a 4-year term from 2022 to 2026.
A key accomplishment, and one that we at Deaf.BG are particularly proud of, is Sasho's involvement in the working group that prepared and facilitated the adoption of the Bulgarian Sign Language Act in 2021. This landmark legislation marked a critical step towards integrating deaf people into Bulgaria's socio-economic fabric. Sasho's vigilant participation is crucial in developing normative documents to implement this Act effectively.

Alex is a compassionate young man with a boundless heart in which the Deaf community now has a special place. His kindness, generosity and empathetic nature, paired with the most radiant smile one can find, leave a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to cross paths with him. Empathy comes naturally to him, as he possesses an innate ability to understand and share the emotions of others, guiding him to selflessly assist and support those around him.
Professionally, Alex has flourished as a software engineer. He completed his education at SoftUni, which is one of the largest and most esteemed IT educational institution in Bulgaria. He has been part of a prominent startup project in Germany, where he evolved as a MEAN Stack Developer. From the moment he discovered his passion for programming, he has been dreaming of creating innovative products that would enhance and simplify people’s lives worldwide. Alex firmly believes that while humanity is progressing towards digitalization, it is crucial to utilize new technologies responsibly, without losing sight of our fundamental values.
During his leisure time, Alex enjoys challenging his intellect with various strategy games, complex 3D puzzles and sudoku. His greatest passion lies in mastering the Rubik's Cube – his personal record stands at an impressive 13 seconds, and he can solve it blindfolded in under 5 minutes. With a remarkable memory, he has learnt by heart an astounding sequence of 1800 digits after the decimal point of the Pi number.
Reflecting on his journey into the world of the Deaf, Alex shares, "I've always been intrigued by alternative forms of communication, such as Morse code, cryptography or stenography, as they offer unique ways to connect with others beyond verbal means. Motivated by a desire to explore new methods of communication, I embarked on learning Bulgarian Sign Language. However, this language surpassed its initial purpose for me, evolving into a gateway to the expansive world of the Deaf. Here, I've encountered individuals with the purest souls, genuine warmth and determination. At Deaf.BG, I've discovered myself and I realized that my calling is to be a hearing ally for the Deaf community. I'm committed to contributing my skills and efforts towards a world where the deaf people are on equal footing with the hearing, having full access to information, education and social interactions, facilitated through sign language. In this world, the profession of sign language interpreting thrives through collaboration between Deaf and hearing, fostering mutual understanding and inclusion. My hope is for the hearing people to recognize and appreciate the depth and beauty of Deaf culture and language. It is our responsibility to break down barriers between the hearing and Deaf communities, as the Deaf cannot gain the ability to hear, however we can certainly learn sign language.”
Antoniya is a Deaf woman and an avid traveler who loves exploring both Bulgaria and destinations abroad. By immersing herself in different cultures and traditions, she broadens her worldview - a value she holds dearly.
Antoniya serves on the board of directors of the Listen Up Foundation and works as an accountant in a private company. She is also actively involved in organizing various activities for the Deaf community.
Having grown up in a Deaf family, Antoniya firmly believes in the potential of Deaf individuals. She is convinced that the Deaf community can truly thrive by preserving and protecting its identity.
At the heart of Deaf.BG is Asho, our driving force and inspirational leader. Known for his unwavering commitment to equality and justice, he embodies our mission to empower the deaf community in Bulgaria. Asho's academic journey is as impressive as his professional accomplishments. He holds a Master's degree in Special Pedagogy from Sofia University after graduating from the American University in Bulgaria. Currently, Asho is a Fulbright Scholar at Gallaudet University. His academic pursuit is in the field of public administration, with a specialized focus on deaf rights. Gallaudet is the only higher education institution in the world that offers bilingual education in American Sign Language and English. This prestigious university is renowned for its commitment to advancing the education and professional development of the deaf and hard of hearing community.
He is a graduate of the American University in Bulgaria and a master's degree in "Special Pedagogy" from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". Now, Asho is a Fulbright Scholar (2023-2025) at Gallaudet University, majoring in public administration with a focus on deaf rights. It is the only higher education institution in the world offering bilingual education in American Sign Language and English.
In 2014, Asho's passion for advocacy led him to found the Listen Up Foundation. His commitment to the deaf community is further evidenced by his role as an official Bulgarian Sign Language Council member at the Ministry of Education and Science from 4 to 2022.
A notable highlight of Asho's career is his instrumental role in developing and adopting the Bulgarian Sign Language Act in 2021. This landmark legislation marks a significant step towards the socio-economic inclusion of deaf individuals in Bulgaria. Asho's relentless advocacy and in-depth understanding of community challenges position him as a distinguished leader in the deaf community.

Gabi is a Deaf woman with a passion for traveling and exploring different cultures. She deeply values her connection with nature and seizes every opportunity to immerse herself in it.

Gabi shares: "We Deaf people must stay united and cohesive to build a stronger community and achieve more together."
Gergana is a Deaf woman from Burgas. She is a member of the board of directors of the “Vzaimno” Foundation and also works as a trainer. In her free time, she enjoys a variety of sports, including cycling, volleyball, table tennis, hiking in nature, and photography.
Her motto is "I can". Gergana dreams of uniting Deaf people around a common cause to create a better and more fulfilling life for the Deaf community in Bulgaria.
Denitsa is a Deaf woman and mother of two Deaf children. She grew up in a hearing family and is deeply grateful to her parents for the valuable lessons they taught her: patience, honesty, dignity, hard work, and a selfless desire to help others. Denitsa is a positive, organized, and capable individual with a bilingual identity, having grown up using both Bulgarian Sign Language and spoken Bulgarian. She is also proficient in lip-reading and lives by her personal motto: "Look ahead and boldly move upward."
Denitsa holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Management from the Technical University of Sofia and a Master's degree in Accounting and Control from the University of National and World Economy. Additionally, she has earned a professional teaching qualification from Sofia University.
Denitsa shares: “My goal is for hearing people to see Deaf individuals as normal and equal, to communicate with them openly and without hesitation. I believe that young Deaf people will gain better acceptance and feel confident everywhere. They are highly capable and can form strong friendships with hearing people.".
Dochy is profoundly connected to the deaf community, being deaf herself with deaf parents, a deaf sister, a deaf husband, and a deaf daughter. Deaf culture and identity are ingrained in her, making any issue concerning the deaf community vitally significant. She passionately campaigns for deaf children to receive comprehensive education using Bulgarian Sign Language.
Known for her exceptional organizational skills, structure, and goal-oriented approach, Dochi possesses a keen eye for detail and the ability to perceive the bigger picture. Her strategic thinking skills shine through in her ability to conceptualize, research, and analyze results effectively.
Her heart truly lies in Teaching Bulgarian Sign Language, and her captivating, soft, and flowing sign language gestures are a testament to her passion and skill. Her informative videos in natural sign language provide enjoyment and learning for deaf children, youth, and adults alike.
Dochi is proficient in both Bulgarian and international sign languages, as well as spoken Bulgarian and English. She holds a Bachelor's in 'Preschool and Elementary Pedagogy' from Sofia University' St. Kliment Ohridski' and is completing her Master's in "Sign Language in Education".
As a Chairman of the Active Deaf Youth Organisation (ADYO), Dochi actively participates in various projects and organizes events and training sessions to empower deaf youth. At the Listen Up Foundation, she serves as a preschool and primary school specialist and a Bulgarian Sign Language trainer at the Deafinitely Sign Academy. Her contributions include collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Science to create a methodological guide for teaching Bulgarian Sign Language in the education system. Furthermore, Dochi holds a significant position as an official Council for Bulgarian Sign Language member at the Ministry of Education and Science, serving a 4-year term from 2022 to 2026.

Evgeni is a bohemian at heart who knows how to truly enjoy life. With his great sense of humor and knack for having fun, he is the life of any gathering. He works as a valet and serves on the board of directors for the Active Deaf Youth Organization (ADYO). In his free time, he enjoys pursuing his passion for photography. Evgeni dreams of inspiring Deaf individuals to grow and develop, contributing to the flourishing of the entire Deaf community in Bulgaria.
Eli's life journey uniquely positions her as a bridge between the Deaf and hearing worlds, a role she embraces as a sign language interpreter. Born to deaf parents with an older brother who is also Deaf, Eli has been an integral part of the deaf community from a young age.
She has always been closely connected with her family and deaf friends, assisting them in their interactions with the hearing world, in serious matters like medical appointments and dealing with government institutions, or during leisure activities like vacations, excursions, and celebrations.
Growing up bilingual in both spoken Bulgarian and Bulgarian Sign Language, Eli recognized her calling early in life. She naturally pursued and completed a course to become a translator for Bulgarian Sign Language, honing her skills to bridge communication gaps.
Eli is now a certified sign language interpreter, proudly practicing her profession at the social enterprise Truly Sign Language. Here, she provides interpretation services during meetings and manages an access platform used by institutions such as the NRA, NOI, and Allianz Bulgaria.

Zahari, or Zak as we call him, is renowned for his eloquent speech and profound knowledge, leaving a lasting impression on all interacting with him. Being hard of hearing, he has a deep connection to the deaf community and understands the challenges faced by deaf individuals. This insight has driven him to champion their cause and work towards improving their quality of life and fostering environmental change.
Zak is an alumnus of the University of National and World Economy (UNWE) in Sofia, where he graduated in International Relations. He also holds two Master's degrees, one in European Law from Sofia University "St Kliment Ohridski" and another in Financial Management from UNWE. Besides being fluent in German and English, he has recently started learning Bulgarian Sign Language, further solidifying his bond with the community.
His professional journey includes positions in the European Parliament, Overgaz, BMW Financial Services, IBM, and Ericsson. Zack's diverse experience across different sectors equips him to adapt to new projects and offer innovative solutions quickly. His outstanding contributions to IBM Bulgaria and international clients have earned him recognition and awards.
With over 12 years of professional experience in international companies and institutions, particularly in Project Management Consulting, Zak brings invaluable expertise. His knowledge and experience are instrumental in addressing the unique challenges faced by the deaf community.

Ivan, a prominent figure in the deaf community, is known for his global travels to explore best practices in deaf rights, sign languages, and advocacy. His warm, devoted, and witty nature makes him one of the most active and recognized personalities among deaf individuals in Bulgaria. Ivan firmly believes in the power of Bulgarian Sign Language to bring about equality for the deaf community. Beneath his gentle, modest exterior lies a passionate rebel, tirelessly working towards a transformative revolution in the deaf community.
Proficient in Bulgarian, American, Italian, and International Sign Languages, Ivan founded the Vzaimno Foundation in 2010. He envisioned creating a dedicated online media platform offering news exclusively in Bulgarian Sign Language. This initiative swiftly evolved into Bulgaria's first internet television for the deaf, pioneering news broadcasts in sign language and significantly raising Ivan's standing in the community.
As a Director, Cameraman, Presenter, and Advocate, Ivan has garnered immense respect and trust from his peers. His influential role was particularly evident when drafting the Bulgarian Sign Language Act. Ivan was instrumental in rallying the deaf community and unifying various organizations toward a shared goal. His proactive engagement with experts, ministers, and members of the Bulgarian Parliament, along with his participation in numerous working groups, played a crucial role in transforming the draft document into official legislation recognized by an absolute majority in Parliament. His determination, perseverance, and sometimes unconventional approach have been pivotal in altering the prospects for thousands of deaf individuals in Bulgaria.
Ivan's achievements are not just personal triumphs - they represent a collective victory for the deaf community. His efforts have personified the belief that deaf people can progress to become fully integrated citizens of Bulgaria. His contributions were fittingly acknowledged when he received the 2020 Person of the Year Award in the Advocate of the Year category.

Kiril, a third-generation deaf individual, represents what is often referred to in the deaf community as 'purely' deaf. Sign language is his family's primary communication mode, fostering a deep-rooted connection to the deaf culture. An adventurer at heart, Kiril's passion for exploring different cultures has taken him around the globe. Born in Norway, he spent his early years there, absorbing the educational and cultural experiences, before moving to Bulgaria with his mother to contribute to improving the Bulgarian deaf community.
Kiril is known for his directness and his critical stance against injustices. He constantly pursues innovative solutions to challenges and firmly believes in breaking away from the constraints of the past to create a successful present and future.
Fluent in Bulgarian, Swedish, Danish, German, and international sign language, Kiril holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from New Bulgarian University in Sofia.
At the Listen Up Foundation, Kiril plays a vital role in developing sign language resources at the Deafinitely Sign Academy. He also serves as the Coordinator for the integration processes of deaf refugees from Ukraine, showcasing his commitment to supporting those in need.

Mira embodies the essential bridge between the deaf and hearing communities, a role that seems to have been her destiny, shaping her career as a Sign Language Interpreter. Born to deaf parents with a hearing brother, Mira has been navigating both worlds from a young age.
Her early life involved aiding her parents and deaf friends in their interactions with the hearing world – from dealing with state institutions and medical facilities to parent meetings and everyday challenges. These experiences underscored to her the importance of ensuring full accessibility and equality for the Deaf.
Mira's childhood was enriched by the vibrant events, gatherings, and festivals of the deaf community, which she attended with her parents. Deaf culture is ingrained in her being. During her school years, she was actively involved in a theater production for deaf children as a sign language interpreter. Following high school, Mira pursued training as a sign language translator and explored her interest in manicure as a hobby.
Now, Mira is a certified Sign Language Interpreter, working with the social enterprise 'Deafinitely Sign Language.' In her role, she provides interpretation services during meetings, trainings, and conferences and manages an access platform utilized by institutions such as the NRA, NOI, and Allianz Bulgaria.
Mira’s commitment to her profession extends beyond just practice; she continuously seeks to enhance her skills. Driven by a strong desire to contribute to ensuring quality education, genuine accessibility, developmental opportunities, and full equality for the Deaf, Mira is an integral part of our team’s efforts.
Reflecting on her unique life experiences, Mira shares, "I am a child of the Deaf. I have spent my life in both the hearing and deaf worlds. I hope for the Deaf to be better understood and appreciated, to be allowed to showcase their capabilities, because they truly have so much to offer."

Oggie, akin to "fire," embodies comfort, inspiration, and drive. She stands for truth and justice, with a knack for seeing the big picture. Oggie believes that with the right support, everyone can thrive in a positive direction.
Passionate about languages on one hand and striving for stability on the other, Oggie graduated in Spanish Philology with a second major in English, followed by a master's degree in Economics from Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". Later, he added fluency in French and a working knowledge of German to his linguistic repertoire.
Professionally, Oggie thrives in the international public sector (United Nations Development Programme - UNDP) and also in the private sector as a programme officer, project manager and team leader.
In her heart, Oggie carries the rich experience and lessons learned from designing and managing over 30 large-scale projects. These initiatives were implemented with public funding and involved collaboration with a diverse array of experts, institutions, organizations, partners, and donors, including the European Commission, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as central and local governments in Bulgaria. The projects spanned critical areas such as food safety, digital inclusion, environmental stewardship, job creation, support for micro and small businesses, local and community development, lifelong learning, rural development, social inclusion, and civic participation.

Pepo, as we affectionately call him, is a unique member of our Deaf.bg team. As the only hearing individual without a direct personal connection to the deaf community, he brings a distinctive perspective, coupled with a large heart, extensive corporate experience, and a selfless dedication to aiding the full inclusion of deaf people in every facet of social and public life in Bulgaria.
Pepo is proficient in spoken English and Bulgarian and is expanding his communication skills by studying Bulgarian Sign Language. He holds a Bachelor's degree in 'Industrial Management' and a Master's in 'Management of Human Resources' from the Technical University in Sofia. Additionally, has obtained a teaching license at Sofia University 'St. Kliment Ohridski'.
Boasting over 20 years of experience, Pepo's impressive career includes managing projects for the European Commission, working with KPMG, and contributing to a USAID project in Bulgaria. His expertise includes organizing local and international corporate events, training sessions, and conferences. He is also a certified trainer of trainers.
"The deeper I delve into the deaf community, the more evident it becomes that they should rightfully lead in all matters concerning the advancement of sign language, culture, and education. Our role is to listen, encourage, and support them without imposing ourselves or taking credit away from them. This experience has taught me the true essence of 'equality,' and I am committed to standing alongside the deaf community in their pursuit of it. Deaf lead!"
Silvia is a person born with a profound mission. Raised in a family of deaf parents, Silvia's life has been intertwined with Bulgarian Sign Language (BGSL) from the very beginning. This early exposure turned her into a bridge between the hearing and deaf communities, a role that has become her life's purpose.
She graduated with honors in "Special Pedagogy" and holds master's degrees in both "Hearing-Speech Rehabilitation" and "Sign Language in Education". She is certified sign language interpreter and actively serves as a lecturer on Bulgarian Sign Language (BGSL). Additionally, she has contributed significantly to the development of BGSL dictionaries.
Silvia is the founder and the first President of the National Association of Sign Language Interpreters in Bulgaria. He has over 35 years of experience as a professional sign interpreter and over 25 years of experience as such in television. Countless are the important events for deaf people in which she has participated, establishing herself as one of the leading sign interpreters in the country and a guiding light for anyone who wants to pursue this profession.
Silvia's advocacy work is notable, especially in promoting the rights of deaf individuals to accessible environments through BGSL. Her contributions were instrumental in the drafting of the Bulgarian Sign Language Act.
Beyond her professional life, Silvia enjoys reading, watching movies, and connecting with diverse individuals. She firmly believes in embracing diversity as a form of wealth and in recognizing and valuing the unique abilities and qualities of individuals. Her faith in the potential of deaf people is unwavering; she believes they are capable of achieving great things if given the opportunity. Silvia lives by the motto, "Nothing is impossible - together, we can achieve anything!"
Silvia, an embodiment of resilience and determination, believes firmly that with perseverance, nothing is impossible. Her defining qualities are her humanity, devotion, and a staunch belief in the power of integrity and solidarity to drive progress.
A dedicated advocate for communication and collaboration among deaf mothers, Silvia is deeply involved in sharing experiences and developing better solutions for families with deaf members. She champions the idea that strong deaf families, fluent in sign language, are the foundation of a robust deaf community, and she is passionate about demonstrating this to hearing parents of deaf children.
In addition to her love for sports, Silvia is committed to research and educational activities focused on Bulgarian Sign Language. She considers her young deaf daughter, whom she is raising to be confident, proud, and fluent in sign language, her greatest blessing. Silvia's understanding of the key to success and happiness for deaf individuals lies in embracing their sign language and identity.

In her roles, she engages in various projects, mainly focusing on deaf parents of deaf children.
Silvia's pioneering spirit is evident as Bulgaria's first deaf badminton coach for deaf children, a role she continues to fulfill in the Sports Federation of the Deaf in Bulgaria. Collaborating with the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and the Vzaimno Foundation, she has contributed to creating a children's dictionary of Bulgarian Sign Language, a valuable resource for specialists and parents. Additionally, she holds a significant position as an official member of the Council for the Bulgarian Sign Language at the Ministry of Education and Science, serving a term from 4 to 2022.
Silvia's optimistic mottos, "Everything is possible" and "The best is yet to come," are infectious and bring joy to those around her. She firmly believes in the transformative power of sports and sign language in enhancing the confidence and happiness of deaf children, dedicating herself to this cause.
"I've taken on the mission of advocating for quality deaf education because I believe my daughter deserves to embrace her deaf identity happily and receive education through sign language."
Hrisi, the youngest member of our Deaf.BG team, is a beacon of charisma, friendliness, and optimism. Known for her infectious humor and ability to lighten up a room with her laughter, Hrisi is also an accomplished athlete who actively participates in various cycling events. Her most notable achievement, which fills us with immense pride, is winning a bronze medal at the 2022 Deaflympics in Brazil.
Being deaf and raised in a deaf family, sign language is integral to Hrisi's life. She passionately motivates deaf women to excel in sports and lifelong learning. Seamlessly integrating her love for sports with her proficiency in sign language, she is dedicated to imparting this knowledge to those eager to learn.
Hrisi is fluent in Bulgarian, Greek, American, and International Sign Languages, as well as spoken Bulgarian and English. She earned her Bachelor's degree in 'Physical Education and Sports' from Sofia University' St. Kliment Ohridski' and is completing her Master's degree in 'Sign Language in Education'.
As a co-founder of the Active Deaf Youth Organization (ADYO), Hrisi is actively involved in various projects and organizes events and training sessions to empower deaf youth. She is also a valued Listen Up Foundation team member, contributing to creating sign language resources. Her academic journey includes an international exchange program with Gallaudet University in the USA, and she serves as a Sign Language Teacher at the Deafinitely Sign Academy. In collaboration with the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science and the Vzaimno Foundation, she has played a significant role in developing a children's dictionary of Bulgarian Sign Language, a vital resource for specialists and parents of deaf children.

True inclusivity will be achieved when deaf individuals lead the way in creating an inclusive environment."
Shaban's journey began in Karlovo, where he was born to hearing parents. A severe illness in his early years led to the loss of his hearing, presenting Shaban and his family with the formidable challenge of embracing and understanding deaf culture and sign language – a world previously unfamiliar to them.
Shaban's parents embraced this new reality with love and empathy, enrolling him in a specialized school for deaf children in Plovdiv. This decision was pivotal, as it laid the foundation for Shaban and his family to learn sign language progressively, a key element in shaping his identity and future as a deaf individual.
From a young boy from the countryside, Shaban blossomed into the confident man we see today, complete with his own deaf family and enriched by experiences abroad. His enthusiasm for sports is evident in his volunteer work, where he has organized several football and basketball events for the deaf community and led a team of deaf football players twice. Besides these sports, Shaban enjoys skiing and has recently developed a passion for motorbikes.
Known for his exceptional organizational skills, Shaban always completes his tasks promptly. He enjoys engaging with his hearing colleagues, teaching them sign language to bridge the gap between the deaf and hearing worlds. He demonstrates that overcoming communication barriers is simply a matter of willingness and perspective.
Empowerment of the deaf community is a cause close to Shaban's heart. He is acutely aware of the often underestimated potential of deaf individuals and is driven by the belief that his deaf daughter deserves a brighter future. Shaban is a living testament to the success a deaf person, who relies solely on sign language for communication, can achieve.
